I'm giving only 4 stars because they no longer accept cash. How very disappointing! The bakery is still very good despite the noticeably higher prices. Still, one of the best options for coffee and something sweet.

Love their pastries and desserts! Can't even go wrong with anything.. I liked their snickerdoodle, breakfast sandwich, and latte. It was so scrumptious! Good pricing for the visitors like me! The service can be overwhelming as you pick the ticket up in the front and pay attention when it's your turn. This method isn't friendly for deaf people like me. But other than that, the workers are friendly and helpful. The place can get really busy but... Fear not your turn will come up quickly anyways! Seems it's packed with mostly locals.

While visiting Santa Cruz/Capitola area, went to check out Gayle's. It was Saturday mid-morning and the place was jumping. Parking was tight but found street parking about a block away. You take a ticket and wait, but that gives you time to peruse the massive selection of baked goods, sandwiches, salads and desserts. There are "grab and go options" if you dont feel like waiting. We opted for breakfast items like croissant egg bacon, smashed tater tot breakfast sandwich and bacon quiche. All well made and nicely scrambled eggs, soft and creamy. Plenty of great pastries like German chocolate cookie and blueberry bread pudding. Friendly service but the parking can be a chore.

Honestly, can't say enough good things about Gayle's. I moved out of Capitola in 2016. Came up from SoCal for a visit this past month and was blown away. Gayle's is still excellent. So consistent. I was also happy that they have changed how you pay for your food. Instead of being "placed in line" which was always dicey, they have terminals and the person who brings you your order also runs your credit card. By the way, they are cashless now. Super happy with the items we ate at Gayle's. The place is an institution. Pro tip: avoid the parking lot like the plague. Park on the street to avoid the chaos.
